We Remember

250 years of Saint Thomas Clapton.

In 2023 our Whitechapel Foundry Bell turned 250 years old. As we set the clock on our five-year timeline for the regeneration of our church, we look back and learn from the saints who have gone before us.

1773

During the 1770s, Stamford Hill Chapel was built by John Devall to serve as a place of worship for his tenants.

1827

Stamford Hill Chapel was purchased from the vicar of St Martin in the Fields by a group of trustees: Henry Patterson, John Clarke Powell, John Diston Powles and Joshua Watson.

1854

A vestry meeting is held at the Swan Pub to begin the process of separating from St John Hackney - the mother church.

1940-1958

Following bomb damage during the Blitz, St Thomas Church is rebuilt by Cachemaille-Day at the direction of Fr Dachtler.

2023

The Undercroft is refurbished into a community space for the Common.

2012

Clapton Commons is founded to gather and empower local residents to solve local issues.

The future

The next stages of our work are to regenerate the tower and to establish ourself as a venue for music and events.

2020

The old public toilets building is refurbished and reopened as Liberty Hall - a community space on the Common.
